First Grade is Fun

I wondered how the kids felt about our first week of school and this is the response I got.

Finishing the First Week

We finished our first week yesterday. Fridays are fun because we don't do a formal phonics or math lesson and have time to practice some of the new things we have learned or do something a little different. This week we read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom together on Friday and then made trees with our names. Mrs. Beard helped us paint trees we will use for another project next week. We also read Chrysanthemum on our SMART Board and did a fun activity with our names.

Dilly Bars, Poems, and Rainbow Clouds

We had lots of fun at school today. We sang happy birthday to Megan during calendar. Today is her sixth birthday! Happy Birthday Megan!! This morning we rewrote a poem, New, that we read yesterday. Everyone chose four new things they have for school to include in their poem. It is our first poem in our Poetry Pages folder. We also finished our rainbow name clouds. They look really nice hanging in our room. This afternoon Megan treated the class to dilly bars. They were yummy!!

First Day of School

Today was our first day of first grade. We are off to a great year! We played a game Hickety, Pickety, Bumblebee to get to know one another. We decorated paper t-shirts to put on our hall bulletin board. We read some good books about the first day of school.

Our Visit to CMH

In May our class enjoyed visiting Crawford Memorial Hospital. Brayden's mom was our guide and Mason's mom helped out too. Thanks so much for a great trip! You can read the students' reports about the trip and see a video of our trip on our class website.

Planet Earth

During Earth Day week we discussed many ways we could help the Earth. Last week we read some books about Earth and watched a video clip about the Earth. We read The Important book and then used the pattern of writing to write about what is important about our Earth. Then we put it together with an art activity. You can read our stories on our website on the April page by clicking The Earth link. http://www.robinsonschools.com/wes/teachers/1/corn/earth_2009.htm

Busy Bees

Last week our reading story was Busy Buzzy Bee. We learned lots about bees. Local beekeeper, Von Meeks, came to school spoke to the children about how he works with the bees. The boys and girls all wrote a report about the facts they had learned and added it to a project. You can read their work on our class webpage. http://www.robinsonschools.com/wes/teachers/1/corn/bees_2009.htm
