Black Cat On the Fence

Our class guess the covered words in the poem Black Cat on the Fence. Then we built the lines of the poem on our SMARTBoard. Next the boys and girls found words on a mixed up version of the poem. After that they put the words together in order to build their own copy of the poem. After we finished the poem everyone had fun illustrating their poem.

Halloween Happenings

We had lots of fun in October learning about pumpkins and spiders. Check out some of our spider projects and take a look at our jack-o-lantern glyphs.

Halloween Alphabet

The class worked together to write a Halloween Alphabet book. Everyone drew a letter to illustrate and write a corresponding sentence to publish. Then they illustrated and recorded their project in Pixie. Enjoy our spooky alphabet!

Pumpkin Patch

Our class had a great time at Dorney's Pumpkin Patch in Lawrenceville. Thanks to our wonderful parents and grandparents for helping on our trip.

Roll the Dice

We worked very hard on math and phonics assessments today. Then we had some fun in math playing a game. We rolled two dice on the SMART Board and then added the numbers together beginning with the largest number and counting on. We made a graph of the equations according to the answers to see which one would reach the top first. It was lots of fun to practice math today!!

Our Jack-O-Lantern

Thanks so much to Megan's dad for coming to school on Friday and carving a jack-o-lantern with the class. The class really had a great time!! We counted the seeds and found there were 500. We have been reading some spooky Halloween books by the light of the jack-o-lantern. Thanks Mr. Gallagher!!

Jack-o-lanterns and Scaring Pepper

Mrs. Wiseman came on Friday to do a fun experiment with the class. We started with a bowl of water and added some pepper. The class observed that the pepper spread all over the surface of the water. Then they dipped a toothpick in dishwashing liquid and touched it to the water. The pepper was "scared" and all rushed to the sides of the bowl. Lots of oohs and aahs were heard!! Mrs. Wiseman explained that it was because of surface tension.

In the afternoon we had fun making some jack-o-lanterns from paper strips. Some were funny and some were pretty scary!!

Our Fall Window

Thanks to Rheana Powell our classroom window is so cute!! She painted a fall picture of Winnie the Pooh on our window. Thanks Mrs. Powell!!

OREO Day

Oreo Day was lots of fun! We stacked Oreos for the OREO Projecet, made Oreo sculptures, at Oreos. Fun, fun, fun!

O.R.E.O. Day

We had lots of fun stacking Oreos today. Thanks so much to Mrs. Austin, Mrs. Brown, Mr. Buchen, Mrs. Mendenhall, and Ms. Jane Priest for helping us stack Oreos today. Thanks also to all of the families who sent Oreos to make the project possible. The highest stack was made by Armando with 20 Oreos. Alexis Mendenhall came in second with 19. and Lexi and Thomas tied for third with 18 each.

Fire Safety

Today we were visited by two of our local firemen. They talked to us about fire safety and brought two of their fire trucks to show us how they use them to help fight fires. They also showed us some of the equipment they use to help them fight fires. We also discussed fire safety in class and made a fire safety booklet. Then everyone wrote some fire safety rules that they remembered. We are working on making a fire dog to display our writing with. Ask your child how they can be safe if there is a fire.

J.I.L.G.

We are fortunate to have a group of students from the high school come a couple of times a month to share some activities with us. The J.I.L.G. class, Jobs for Illinois Graduates, prepares and leads all of the activities. Our first graders think the big kids are pretty neat!

Fire Safety Dogs

We learned how to be safe in a fire in October. After learned lots of facts we made fire safety dogs and wrote about the rules we had learned.

Learning About Columbus

In October we learned lots about Columbus. We made a rebus poem to help us remember some of the facts. Clck the picture below to see more pictures of this activity.

O.R.E.O. Project 2008

The boys and girls had a great time participating in the O.R.E.O. project. First, we each got two turns to see how many Oreos we could stack. After stacking the Oreos the boys and girls enjoyed eating Oreos along with a glass of milk. They also used the Oreos they had stacked to make Oreo sculpture. Thanks so much to all of the parents and grandparents who helped us out!!

Wild About Nature Field Trip

On Thursday, October 16th the first grade classes will be taking a field trip to Marathon's Nature Conservation Area. If you would like to accompany us for a day of fun learning about nature please let me know by Monday, October 13th. Jack-O-Lantern Glyphs

We made jack-o-lantern glyphs today. Each part of our project tells something about us. Later this week we will write about our projects.

Kyra's mom helped us record our voices for a video of our Chicka Chicka Boom trees. Everyone had painted a tree and made something at the top which begins with the same sound as their name. Look for the video on our website later this week. Thanks for helping us record, Mrs. Bruce!
