We made a graph of the equations according to the answers to see which one would reach the top first. It was lots of fun to practice math today!!

Jack-o-lanterns and Scaring Pepper

Mrs. Wiseman came on Friday to do a fun experiment with the class. We started with a bowl of water and added some pepper. The class observed that the pepper spread all over the surface of the water. Then they dipped a toothpick in dishwashing liquid and touched it to the water. The pepper was "scared" and all rushed to the sides of the bowl. Lots of oohs and aahs were heard!! Mrs. Wiseman explained that it was because of surface tension.

In the afternoon we had fun making some jack-o-lanterns from paper strips. Some were funny and some were pretty scary!!

Fire Safety

Today we were visited by two of our local firemen. They talked to us about fire safety and brought two of their fire trucks to show us how they use them to help fight fires. They also showed us some of the equipment they use to help them fight fires. We also discussed fire safety in class and made a fire safety booklet. Then everyone wrote some fire safety rules that they remembered. We are working on making a fire dog to display our writing with. Ask your child how they can be safe if there is a fire.

Johnny Appleseed

In September we talked about Johnny Appleseed. We read some books about his life and watched a short video. Then we brainstormed some facts we had learned. In writing everyone wrote about some of the things they had learned about Johnny. We then made Johnny Appleseeds and put the writing on our art project. They look really nice in our hallway at school. Next time you are at school take a look and read our Johnny Appleseed facts.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

We read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom the first week of school and did a couple of projects to go along with it. On the first we tore construction paper to make the trunk of a tree and added the letters to our names climbing the finished tree. On the other we painted trees and added ourselves climbing the tree to find something that starts like each of our names. What would you climb the tree to find that begins like your name?

Beginning Week Two

We started our second week of school today. The boys and girls predicted what our reading story will be about by erasing the SMART Board a little at a time to reveal a hidden picture. We worked on writing numbers in math and discussed the long o sound in phonics. This afternoon we worked on the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom trees we painted with Mrs. Beard last week. Everyone made themselves climbing the tree to see something that begins like their name. Most of us will finish them tomorrow.

First Grade is Fun

I wondered how the kids felt about our first week of school and this is the response I got.

Finishing the First Week

We finished our first week yesterday. Fridays are fun because we don't do a formal phonics or math lesson and have time to practice some of the new things we have learned or do something a little different. This week we read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom together on Friday and then made trees with our names. Mrs. Beard helped us paint trees we will use for another project next week. We also read Chrysanthemum on our SMART Board and did a fun activity with our names.
